Facts about Domestic Violence

  • 1 in 4 women will suffer abuse.
  • 32 female domestic violence deaths in Arkansas in 2007, 22 in 2008.
  • Arkansas consistently ranks 1st nationally in the number of African American women murdered by batterer.
  • Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44.
  • Battering occurs among all types of families, regardless of income, profession, region, ethnicity, educational level or race.
  • The U.S. Department of Justice has found 95 percent of victims of spouse abuse are female.
  • Batterers use drinking as one of many excuses for their violence.
