Stories from the Shelter – March 2016

Tammie* came to the shelter to escape a life of abuse. Once she moved out of the shelter, she continued to receive outreach services. Through working with Luciana, WCF’s Community Housing Advocate, she recently found a new apartment that fits the needs of her family. Their previous place was not somewhere that Tammie or her children felt safe. But starting over is expensive, and it was what she could afford. Thankfully, with assistance from WCF, the new apartment is affordable, large enough, comfortable, and safe.

“I cannot begin to thank you guys enough”, she recently wrote to Luciana. “Between Thanksgiving, Christmas, that amazing Christmas Party and all the gifts, the help with housing, and finding a great place to live, along with the move, where do I begin!!!! I really cannot thank you enough. At our old place, my children were scared, feeling the lack of safety and privacy. But now, we feel safe, and my child has a room. He has a room with a window! The children love it, and to them, this feels like a mansion. They are very happy, and I couldn’t have done any of this without you guys! I don’t have any complaints, but I also don’t feel like any amount of “thank you’s” could suffice either. You saved our lives. Without you guys, none of this would’ve been possible. We are all excited and very grateful!”
